Hello ive just been reading some of your comments and I found some extremely sightful.

I happen to be a British person so hello, I dont really care if you shout abuse at me but anyway here I go I will give you some views from outside the United States of America on why people hate your country and its people.

1. We hate you for your ego and perspective of the world.
2. We hate you becuae of Bush and your government
3. We dont hate you becuase you are a super power.. just becuase you show it off in trying to rule the world the way you want it. (This links back to reason 1.)

Those were just some very very very very brief points. Now before some of you go on about me not knowing Americans or not knowing America on the contrary I know many Americans and I like them... however those americans are in constant contact with european people and so a nice. I have also met other americans that I completely despise due to reason 1 and 3 and also they shouted abuse at me... just for being British and European.

Also yes we are your allies and Yes we also hate your country if your allies hate you who really likes you? the only thing keeping us remotely close is our government most British and Europeans would like to see the back of America.

There was this Summers person talking about giving alot to other countries. Well yes you give alot... about 80% of that goes to Isreal and American companies in Isreal. Also yes you give the most but if you divided the money per capita (per person) it is 22nd out of the 22 most developed countries. And yes you are the fattest country in the world... live with it, and while trying to live with it try walking to.

One of the funniest things is the way many patriotic Americans are. The media change and warp your views and minds. Ive heard many an American talk that their country fights for 'freedom' and 'democracy' and that the middle-east and Asia hate these 2 things and 11/9 (British way of writing a date is DD/MM/YYYY) was an attack on these things. Well no they werent 11/9 was an attack on America not freedom. Your country isnt the only democracy in the world, you arent the only country where there is freedom. Problem is many Americans have no freedom the American media sees to that.

Also dont forget you arent the only ones suffering. Yes we had terrorist attacks too did you know that? Just checking.

Now we go onto History of war. The Americans say they won World War Two (the correct and political way to spell it not WWII) and that they joined to fight for the freedom of Europe.

Im sorry but this is wrong. You were forced into the war, you were attacked by the japanese at Pearl habour you only joined the way in self defence.
The British and French (very cool guys) however joined without being attacked, they declared war for the freedom of Poland.

Also the Americans did little compared to many of the participants of WWII. You say you won the war for us, did you know that you lost 300,000 men in that war? Did you also know that the Soviet Union lost 20,000,000 (twenty million) men and women? They also put alot more effort into the war and so did the British. we fought right the way through, ever heard of The Battle of Britain? If not look it up. The French fought all the way too, throught the French resistance, all countries that were occupied had a resistance, all allies fought against Germany, all allies EQUALLY won World War Two.

Also if the Americans can defeat people so easily how comes they could not win Vietnam or the Korean war? Even now they cannot win a war take a look at Iraq and Afghanistan, they are worse than before 11/9.

Now then a very breif description of 'Why the World Hates America'

(P.S: American English is funny and so is your slang... not much offence meant)

because of its real fortunes such as culture, productivity, natural resources & opportunity. Just the world was never in a position to show its true colors at the USA . See in todays age theres availability to communicate through Internet & Satellite technology Etc. Lets face it the world is jealous of the USA , for example up until the USA came about what did the world have to show , WOW they invented the wheel & beer . The USA in 200 + years did more than the world combined in several thousand . For Example we invented the light bulb , airplane & we even put a man on the moon . So lets not criticize our history of this great nation that is  a super power that provides aid to the world and a neutral country that is home to the United Nations & the world's financial capitol . If we give up then we as Americans will feel if we gave up on the world .  Because with all due respect our history is great . Not because the world or even people in our own country think were bullies or uncivilized people . Because let me tell you something if the world was any better where did all the world wars start , where did the inquisitions happen , where did the genocides take place, And Lets be for real if the USA really wanted Iraq it would not take us years to do so. ( If most countries in the world would have as much power as the USA )  The World Would be an unsafer place .

P.S. ( If the country is so messed up and in bad condition why are there so many candidates running for office ? )

See typical American ego... this is why America is hated so much. Many things were invented before America was 'created'. Also I am VERY sure neutral countries aren't supposed to go to war, you want a neutral country? live in Switzerland. Also note that if you research more deeply the light bulb was first Created by a British person of the surname Swan, Edison partially stole and perfected swans idea (Swan tried to have Edison sued). You think your history is great? it only goes back a few hundred years. Ours goes back thousands (note: a thousands is bigger than a few hundred). Also about all the genocides and world wars yes they happened in Europe. And yes the American government is creating more of them. Just they don't happen in the USA (except for the crazy school guy with a gun)

Also if no country had the power of the USA it would be even safer.

Our hatred does not come from jealousy, it comes from ruse Americans much like yourself that think they rule the world. Also have fun with your opportunities to get as fat as possible.

Another fine example of why people hate Americans thank you for showing us USA.

No United States of America, no world...period? I am very sure that when I last checked the world had lasted millions of years before even the concept of USA was thought of.

Many other people also wish that you leave the rest of the world alone you are rotting it by doing too much, including your CO2 emissions.
Note: we don't want your money the dollar is weak.
Note: We don't want your protection its our governments that want it.
and last Note: The world would be a safer place without you, if it wasn't for the USA would there be a war in Iraq? Would there be a war in Afghanistan? Who's fault was it that so many died in Vietnam? America? Of course. Americans fund both sides then realise its made a mess and tries to sort it out with brute force and still it doesn't learn.

We don't want anything to do with you and your countries people (We don't mind the nice ones. GO NICE AMERICANS!)

Tom,

One thing is certain, Britain matters to the rest of the world just like the rest of the world matters to Britain. America also matters to the rest of the world just like the rest of the world matters to America. America got her independence from Britain, remember. Also remember that the world has witnessed many super power nations in the past - the Romans, the Egyptians etc. In their respective reigning periods, each of them acted as Police of the world. In the process of policing the world, they made both pardonable and unpardonable mistakes. Take a nostalgic look at what Great Britain and other European countries did to the continent of Africa. Remember the partition and scramble for the Africa. Remember the 'looting' of Benin Empire by the great Britain in what is now known as Benin Massacre of 1897.

Tom, our prayer should be that God should give the world the leaders that will have the interest of the world citizens at heart. Leaders that will change the world to a new and better place. Leaders that will take the bull by the horns in the fight against HIV/AIDS, Climate Change etc.

British people are proud people so also Americans. British people are hardworking so also Americans. Whatever you find in Britain, you will also find in America. Let us continue to pray for our leaders so that they will always come out with pro-people policies.

It was the Romans yesterday. It was the Egyptians yesterday. It is America today. It could be the turn of the Great Britain tomorrow only time will tell.

Dear Folorunsho  ,
You really should be careful with historical facts. Certenly when people that are very much interested in it are following this discussion.

You've just proven my point and a point that Tom.C made very briefly.

You've prove the point of Tom.C in the matter of the unindependent Media in the USA. "our prayer should be that God should give the world the leaders that will have the interest of the world citizens at heart" Give me a break... how naïve can you get ? Have you been to a Russian re-education camp (called Fox New or CNN or...) ? It's a nice example how American public opinion is controlled and how modern wars are justified. It reminds me of Hitler :"I'm your leader and I know what's right for our country so don't be critical ... just agree with me"
To close off ; Tom.C , your views are a little too extreme for me. But the core is truthfull.

Secondly you have proven my point , beeing that the world hates american foreign policy.
You referred to the Roman empire and the Egyption one...First of all , you have a very big ego to compare the USA (that only exists since the second half of the 18th centry) with Empires that lasted for more than a millennium and had a very highstanding culture (I don't think that the USA has such a culture).  Your comparison is only true on the matter of military power and economical influence (but already is this economical influence crumbling). Well , If you'd like to compare yourself with these 2 empires you should know that the barbarians (the other countries) absolutely hated Romans or Egyptians and couldn't wait to plunder their capital. Something they did eventually. Countries that Really protect the interests of the people of the world and have that as a priorety have the most chance of lasting on forever. Regretfully , those countries don't exist (yet) and even if they did , other agressive ones would eventually whipe them out.

PS1 : I'm very irritated by the way you radomly abuse historical facts to say ... "Well , the Britisch empire made mistakes , why can't we"... The only reason why history is so important is because we shouldn't make the same mistakes twice. And If the same mistake is taken again it is a well tought disicion with concequenses that are known to the desicion makers. Period.

PS2:  Dear USA (I mean the guy who participates in this discussion), reading your reactions i'd say your a frustrated teenager. But I liked your last sentence "I wish we didn't do anything with the rest of the world, take care of just our own and let the rest of you rot." This would mean the USA would return to ist Truman ways of foreign policy ; I'd be very excited about it.  And I have good news for you... In the near future America will go to mars....why don't you move to that place ? We won't bother you there. Just make sure the martians like you better than the world does now.

Dear Van Tornhaut Lorenzo,

I agree totally with your analysis. But really that is the history for you – one super power nation goes and another comes. It is often said that the biography of the world is the history of great men. The question arises: how many real great men do we have in the last five decades? It is unfortunate that our fate is often being determined by the actions of our leaders.

I believe, most Americans don’t like their foreign policies as well. They don’t even like some of the policy makers. Please read the following books written by Americans themselves and find out the truth:

1. Hope Unraveled: People’s Retreat and Our Way Back by Richard Harwood

2. Politics for People: Finding a Responsible Public Voice by David Mathews

If we keep on criticizing the government, it has nothing to do with the average American citizen. Like I postulated earlier, British government in time past made some mistakes due to its obsession for power.

The Industrial Revolution that broke out in Europe after the abolition of slave trade in the 18th Century left the Europe with two fundamental questions:

  1. Where and how can we get raw materials?
  2. Where and how can we find a market for our products?

And so they found answers to these two questions by scrabbled and partitioned Africa. To answer the questions Britain, after the Benin Massacre of 1897, established an Indirect Rule system of government in all her colonies. One of the greatest blunders of the British Government that is still affecting Nigeria till today is the Amalgamation of the Southern Protectorate and Northern Protectorate of Nigeria in 1914. Two protectorates that have nothing in common were forced to become one because of selfish interest of the British government. Remember, I never say British people are bad- I do not generalize.

In this discussion, I think we have to separate governments from people because majority of the citizens are not in government and most of them don’t contribute to the formulation of policies - either domestic or foreign.

Try not to hate Americans but hate the American government and its foreign policies. Just like the Britons, American citizens are also responsible. In the 9/11 terrorist attacks, how many policy makers died? How many government people died? Most of the people that died were innocent American citizens. President Bush and members of his cabinet are still alive today. Please try and separate responsible citizens from irresponsible government.

Dear folorunsho ,

If you read my first comment you'll see I only critisize US foreign policy and not the US people. I pray that eventually all americans grow out of the propaganda machine that's been blinding the american public and silencing the peoples voice.

But I hope that you can understand the frustration of people like Tom.C who detest the arrogance of some US tourists when the visit our countries or when we meet them on vacation.

The lack of respect for other countries their way of life ,their history and their culture, as the US gouvernment is showing for the moment , is resulting in a übermensch kind of feeling of some less educated americans towards every other nation. Us gouvernment is acting like they are the only one that deserves to exist on the face of this earth. especcially when closing of every speach with "may God continue to bless america" , since when is God american ?

I've experienced it too when beeing asked if my country(Belgium) ever meant anything in history. When I began about the middleages and the massive influence of Flandres (just a little part of our story that runs trough millenia of European history) they just laughed and said "well , not everyone can be american"

catch my drift ?

If people weren't so rude when it came to cellphones, it may not be a problem when it came to cellphones in the class.  I am in college and I hate it when another students sit in class on their phone as if they are alone.  Before the cellphone came along, parents were able to contact the school if there was a problem.  They can still call the office as far as I am concerned.  There is a time and place for everything, cellphones don't need to be in the classroom.  We should be used to them by now. We just need to get over it, there are much more important things in the world to worry about and having a cellphone in the class is not one of them.

Grown,

I think you missed the point here. We are discussing 'why does the world hate the USA' and not cellphones. The last contribution from 'Nothing' you will find before yours. Commenting on the last contribution, I believe it is not proper to hate a country. It is also not proper to hate the citizens of a particular country- it will amount to (a) error of judgement (b) over-generalization. You may hate the leaders, if the the policies of the leaders are not pro-poor. Over the years, I have tried to correct the impression that all Nigerians are bad through my actions, attitude and behaviour. If one or two or three even ten people of a particular country involve in an act of illegality, it doesn't means that over 1 million people of that same country are bad. We have good Americans. We have good Britons. We have good Africans. We have good Nigerians. On the negative side, we have bad people coming from these countries. Even in Iraq, Afganistan and all these terrorist territories, we still have good people. So, let us keep up the tempo of this discussion.

Thats the same propaganda that was fed to the world, the same crap that has created all the self digested ignorance. 9/11 was a master mind attack on the US that had been coming for a very long time as a result of the invasive nature and obtuse attitude of America in general, any attack on American soil that followed was sure to be of far smaller magnitude. The attack did what it was planned to do, destroy the world as it was that day by inciting stereotypical hatred based on inaccurate racial profiling. America seems to think the entire middle east is out to get them. Its this ridiculous attitude and aggressive stance that has created the ongoing hostility for the past decades. The world does not care what happens to America, I am sad that innocent civilians were attacked and died including people from my own country. However when you weigh the 'terror' from that one day against the terror people in iraq have lived through for the past years can you ever actually understand the impact American intervention forces have had on an entire country.

Put yourself in that position and ask yourself if you were woken by your home city being bombed by a powerful oppressive world power with intent on penetrating your society and using it as a staging platform to increase the spread of its arms net. How would you feel awaking to this, bombs, guns violence and death on every corner of an entire capital. I do not think anyone can sit back and even fathom within any degree of accuracy how this would feel for a week, let alone years. However you being American I can certainly understand the complete lack of foresight into the ramifications of your countries actions. I mean a recession looms and all the money Mr Bush spent on a fake war is bound to cripple your economy and send you back to the early 90's.

To top that off the fact that America one of the highest polluting nations in the world does not sign the Kyoto Agreement. Why ?

America spent 'Trillions' of dollars on war to secure long term fossil fuel supplies, well this in essence explains the reasons why they would not agree to lower their emissions, after investing trillions into their future energy supplies how can they then stop their agenda and defer to what the world asks of them, I mean its only the whole world demanding they take action. What the hell, America is the epicenter of the world today now isn't, heaven forbid they should listen to the other 95% of people on earth, nope they close their eyes and hope for the best pull the trigger and flatten a whole country then expect it to rebuild and take on and accept the American 'freedom' and democracy, which is known already to be deeply flawed.

I do not like America because of what it stands for. The way it defies the world time and time again. The way it instills fear into smaller countries who do not wish to comply, however the main reason i dislike America is because it lies to the world time and time again and then never admits its mistakes and takes preventative action to ensure the madman at the reigns cannot ever under any circumstance run his fathers vendetta from decades ago in a world at present. If anything can be learnt from aged civilisations like those in EU, it is that hatred for other countries, aggression and deceit will eventually lead to the demise of great empires.

John,
This is a very good one. But the World cares alot about AMERICA and that is why we are all deliberating or discussing this issue. Kyoto agreement is what every reasonable government should append its signature on. You are right, we all have to brace up and find a way of controlling our policy makers. John, please don't seat on the fence politically in your country. Together we can change the world for good.
