There should be a way that student's can have their phone's in school because what if it's an emergency and they parent's need to get in contact with them i know that some kid's use their phone for the wrong reason , but what about the good kid's that really need it for after school and going to do thing's with friend's because if you think that i'm going to school and then i got to go back home to get my cell phone or what people do now is go to the corner store and let the man in the store hold it but i don't trust them to hold my cell phone... |

I totally agree with Wayne, I believe that students should have their cell phones in school. There can be a emergency such as 9/11 where students will need phones in case normal phone lines around the school or building they happen to be in at the moment to contact there parents. It is bad when a parent cannot contact their children when something very wrong has happen. |

Students bring cell phones in school each and everyday regardless of the rules that exist to restrict it. So, what is my position on the cell phone rule? I believe the rule should be altered in some way... Students have cell phones for a varierty of reasons. Some may have it for safety reasons and other may have primarily for the fact that parents need to stay in touch with them after school. Ok, then those reasons are substantiated. What to do when students use cell phones in class? Some students need boundaries and the rules provide boundaries. I have seen and heard too many times where cell phones go off in class or are used in class. This disrupts the lesson; a teacher's ability to teach and a student's ability to learn. Try to put yourself in the place of a teacher or a school administrator; now how does your position change on the issue??? |

it really does not matter for me to bring phones in school cuz i live not too far and also it distracts people from their education and yours. now if u turn it off all day might as well leave it home. |

Cell phones should be allowed in high schools for a number of reasons. One is for emergency reasons because you never kno what may happen, and some people live too far lik outside of Queens, so kids should be able to be n contact with their parents at all times. I understand that cell phones can get kids in trouble, but it can also keep them out of trouble. |

i think that devices should be banned from schools, because we are going to school for one reason that is to get a good education.they are phones in school incase of any emergency. when students bring such devices to school they pay less attention in class because most phones have music now a day.

Mr. Johnson, I'm sorry but you are sooo wrong. Your point is a not very good one because if cell phones going off disrupts the learning process then WHY do teachers have phones in their classes?!? WHY do administraters have walkies which are very loud and distracting in school?!? FOR WHAT? Communication!? Safety?! Isn't that why WE (students) have cell phones? For safety and communication involving family affairs? Are we any less important than the administraters and the staff that we are unallowed to be granted the same priveleges? Teachers as well as students sometimes play with their cell phones in class and on more then one occasion i've witnessed a teacher's cell phone go off during class, and during a lesson and the teacher never hesitates to excuse her/himself from the class and answer the call. Is the call that important that it has to interrupt the class? Indeed. What do you think the call is about? Something petty like flowers and marbles? No, important issues that obviously need to be resolved or at least informed about right then and there. SO are the teacher's problems less important than the students'? That's what's wrong with America: AUTHORITY. Was this land not promised a free country? Are we not called the "United" states? So why aren't more people being heard on this topic and considered? WHY? You may think I'm getting too deep into this topic but I cannot ignore that "CELL PHONES" were the reason the states were informed of the tragedy on the 9/11 hijacking in the first place. If flight attenders had followed the rules and not used their cell phones on the planes how would the states have known there was a hijacking? Some, used this device to notify that they wouldn't make it, that they were going to die, not to wait up, and to say good byes and I love yous. I'm sorry but I cannot ignore that. With that said, I'd like to inform you that I am a student who is 16 years old and I REFUSE to leave my phone at home. Just because "things happen" and things have happened to me in the school I attend involving my safety and the necessity to be in contact with my parents because of it. Anything can happen.

and DEVON., you agree with Mr. Johnson.. which is fine because everybody is entitled to their own opinions. BUT, picture this: A school of 2000 students are being held hostage, and are not DEFINATELY not allowed to use the phones which are provided to them from the school.. WHAT are the chances that the people holding the students hostage will get the chance to check ALL 2000 STUDENTS for a cell phone before a single phone call is made to notify authority of the situation?? The chances are VERY LOW. And I think that it's wrong that schools are now doing every thing in their power for a child not to bring a cell phone to school by installing medal detectors. As if schools don't have enough issue providing desks, computers, books, and supplies. Their time, money, and efforts are being wasted on this topic because even with metal detectors in the school students still bring their phones by taking them apart and hiding them where they know they will not be searched. Pointless, their efforts are just pointless, and definately money time consuming, all for nothing. |

I think cell phones should continue to remian banned at school. They are very distractive and can easily avert a child's attention to their many games and other devices included inside of cell phones. If they leave their cell phone off inside their backpack then all of the issues that were discussed shouldn't be a huge problem. In the event of an emergency it is not a good idea to use your cell phone because all the school really needs is a whole bunch of worried parents on the scene and blocking the road for the emergency response teams.

I'm guessing 90% of the people talking on here are in high school etc. I'm 40 years old and never had a problem getting ahold of my parents when I was in school. I was in all kinds of activities Football, Wrestling, track. Never really had any emergencies that I couldn't get to a phone in the school and call, and that was after school hours. I understand the need for a cell phone for work cases etc. the real problem is with the schools. I agree that students should be able to bring cell phones to school but they need to be turned into the office before school and returned after school. My opinion is that the school's are too lazy to act on this and don't want to bother with it so most cases schools are saying you can't bring them. I have 4 children so, I understand were things are coming from. For instance I have a 16 year old that called me during work while he was at school just to tell me he was bored in class, He lost his phone for 1 week and believe me it was like taking his whole life away! Phones have become everyday life for the newer generation and I'm sure cell phone companies are loving it. Cell phone companies are making a mint off parents. I'm not saying that all kids are using the phones inapropriat but in most cases they are and Parents need to control that because nobody else is. Trust me you would be amazed at what I have found on my kids phones, that's why they don't have phones anymore! |

You are right. These have proven invaluable in several situations, such as the Platte Canyon High School shootings last year, and during the Columbine shootings.
Not so much for those Amish kids... Which tells us something.
The problem is that very, very few kids have parents who have taught them responsible use of such devices, so unless there is an outright ban on the things, you have kids texting and taking and making calls in the middle of class, disrupting learning for others.
A happy middle-ground would be: you get caught using your phone for non-emergency use (no, calling Britney to ask her to let you borrow her lip gloss before lunch is NOT an emergency) in class, it gets taken away and is not returned until the end of the term.
Of course, since most kids parents are irresponsible, such a policy would never be tolerated, and so it's a pipe dream.
